Chapter 1: Sample Portfolio Class Project
Sample Portfolio Class Project
Every semester, we create a sample portfolio of ten stocks. We then track the portfolio through the semester. This is one of the requirements for the class. In fact, when you buy the textbook new, you get a subscription from a service that specializes in creating portfolios, StockTrak. The idea is each student will create a portfolio and then at the end of the semester, we will see who has the best return. They want to make it into a competition. But as we discuss in the document, in my humble opinion, it may be fun but it is not helpful for instilling a long-term perspective. We want to see how well you do over 10 to 20 years, not sixteen weeks.
Therefore, we will build a single portfolio and follow it together. The face-to-face class will choose the stocks. If you have any you want added, contact me and we will see if the face-to-face class agrees.

Of course, please feel free to build your own portfolio. There are numerous web sites that allow you to build a sample portfolio. We are now using Google because Yahoo has literally destroyed their Finance page. (We were still using the Canadian Yahoo Finance page but they finally go around to destroying that one, too.) Go to finance.google.com Links to an external site. and look for [Portfolios] on the left hand side. You will need a Google user account. You could also try the portfolio tracker on Marketwatch Links to an external site. which is the free Wall Street Journal finance web site. Marketwatch calls their portfolio tracker WatchList.
Check back every so often to see how we are doing.
