Easily Update Due Dates

You taught a course in the Fall but now it's Spring... Or you taught a semester-long class, and now you're teaching a short session. How can you easily update your due dates in Canvas?

Easy! Use the Date Shift setting in Canvas when you copy content from one course to another.

NOTE: This is the only time you can use the Date Shift function, so be sure to do it from the get go.

After going to Settings/Import Course Content/ Import Content, check the "Options" box to "Adjust events and due dates"
New content will appear on the page. Select "Shift dates" to update old course due dates to new ones
KEY: the "Beginning date" field provides you with two options

LEFT: your old/prior course start date
RIGHT: your new Spring 2018 course start date

This will set up your course deadlines to sequence through the Spring 2018 term starting with the first day of classes, based on the start date you enter for the new course. It's just like a row of dominoes: it's where you put that first date (or domino) that counts.

If you're changing from a short-term class to a full-term class, then using the Ending Dates will help you expand the compressed course dates to a full term pace.

Keep in mind this tool helps provide a basic framework of dates in the system. Differences in the Academic Calendar between terms, such as Spring Break, might require some minor adjustments. The easiest way to do this is to go to the Calendar feature on the blue Global Navigation bar in Canvas and drag and drop incorrect dates to the correct deadline accordingly.
