Add New Instructor/Remove Prior Instructor from Course

Instructor enrollments in Canvas are determined by department filing school paperwork.

Adding an instructor of record to a Canvas course

If you've recently been assigned to teach a course but don't see a Canvas shell for that course, you'll need to check with your school's coordinator to make sure all paperwork has been processed. IT enrolls faculty into Canvas courses once departmental paperwork has been officially processed by SWC. The OLC cannot manually enroll instructors into official courses with students.

Instructor removals

  • If you're the former instructor of record for a course in Canvas and wish to remove yourself from the course: please place a ServiceNow request (Instructional Support/Online Learning Center/Other Assistance).
  • If you're the new instructor of record for a course wishing to have other instructors removed from the course: please inform your school dean and/or coordinator. They'll need to email the Online Learning Center ("Online Learning" in SWC's Outlook) to give official approval on which instructor(s) should be removed from which courses.
The Online Learning Center will make the removal once the written request as been received.

Sharing a course with a fellow Instructor

If you're looking to share your course content with another SWC instructor in Canvas, we can copy the content into a sandbox development course and enroll both instructors there. This approach helps maintain FERPA compliance, since only the instructor of record for a course is permitted to be enrolled with students.

Please place a ServiceNow request (Instructional Support/Online Learning Center/Other Assistance) and indicate:

  • course (name, number, section, and term)
  • instructors you wish to invite to your course

Only the owner of the course may make the request.

Tip! You may wish to share your course at the end of the term, when your course is fully built out. Otherwise, the course copy will only contain the content from the moment in time that it was copied.
